History

British colonization

The British settlers came to Australia in 1788 and ravaged the land , Their arrival caused epidemics, they seized all indigenous lands and around 750 000 to 1.25 million people were subjugated through massacres. The British did face some resistance but unfortunately,  up to 20 000 Aboriginal Australians died in violent conflict.

The Stolen Generations

From the years 1910-1970, the Government issued policies of assimilation. This period is what they call the "Stolen Generations". During this time, 10 to 30% of indigenous children were forcibly separated from their parents and homeland . To eradicate any trace of the Aboriginal culture, they were adopted into white families and were forced to abandon their name and native language.

The 20th Century

Over time, the indigenous population slowly gained their freedom, rights and recognition,  In 1965, the Aboriginal Australians gained full citizenship and voting rights. Just after two years, in 1967,  Australians voted for federal laws applying to Aboriginal Australians.

Today

An important event that has advanced the recognition of Aboriginal Australians is the apology of the Prime minister, Kevin Rudd in 2008.  On behalf of the country, he apologized for their actions and the cruelty that the Aboriginal Australians have faced. Furthermore, there is a social change. Policies were issued to reduce inequalities between Aboriginal Australians and non-indigenous Australians.
